Legendary Swedish Actor Stellan Skarsgård to Receive Lifetime Achievement Honor at Locarno Film Festival

Renowned Swedish actor Stellan Skarsgård—celebrated for his unforgettable roles in Good Will Hunting, Mamma Mia!, Nymphomaniac, and many more—will be honored with the prestigious Leopard Club Award for lifetime achievement at this year’s Locarno International Film Festival.

The 72-year-old cinematic icon will receive the award on August 4 at a ceremony in Locarno’s iconic Piazza Grande, followed by an audience Q&A on August 5, giving fans and film enthusiasts a rare opportunity to hear from the man behind some of European cinema’s most memorable performances.

In celebration of Skarsgård’s incredible career, the festival will screen Good Evening, Mr. Wallenberg (1990), Kjell Grede’s historical drama in which Skarsgård portrays Raoul Wallenberg, the heroic Swedish diplomat who saved thousands of Hungarian Jews during the final months of World War II. The lineup also includes What Remains, a gripping crime drama co-written by his partner Megan Everett-Skarsgård, featuring Stellan and one of his sons, Gustaf Skarsgård (Vikings, Oppenheimer). Both Huang and the Skarsgårds are set to attend these special screenings.

Skarsgård’s career is a masterclass in versatility. Balancing European art house projects with Hollywood blockbusters, he has collaborated with auteur Lars von Trier on five films, including Breaking the Waves (1996), Dancer in the Dark (2000), Dogville (2003), and Melancholia (2011). He has also worked with Norwegian director Hans Petter Moland on five films, including In Order of Disappearance (2014) and Out Stealing Horses (2019). On the global stage, his Hollywood credits are equally impressive, with memorable roles in Pirates of the Caribbean, Mamma Mia!, Thor, The Avengers, and Denis Villeneuve’s Dune, where he played Baron Vladimir Harkonnen, a role he will reprise in Dune: Part Two.

On television, Skarsgård has proven his extraordinary range, earning a Golden Globe in 2019 for Best Supporting Actor in the HBO drama Chernobyl and recently appearing in Tony Gilroy’s Star Wars spinoff Andor for Disney+.

Stellan Skarsgård belongs to the tradition of European actors who have distinguished themselves between auteur cinema and Hollywood,” said Locarno artistic director Giona A. Nazzaro. “Endowed with a very powerful stage charisma, he has been able to make every role unforgettable. Capable of reinventing his character according to the needs of the director and the script, he injects his personality into films that are incredibly diverse.”

The Leopard Club Award is presented annually to individuals whose work in film has left a lasting mark on the collective imagination. Past recipients include legendary names such as Faye Dunaway, Mia Farrow, Adrien Brody, Meg Ryan, Hilary Swank, and Daisy Edgar-Jones.

The 76th Locarno Film Festival will take place from August 2–12, promising a star-studded lineup and a celebration of cinematic excellence. Skarsgård’s recognition is a fitting tribute to a career that has left an indelible mark on both European cinema and global pop culture.
